CCMg Nov 28, 2017

On the Nov. 18-21, 2017, the “the 6th World Materials Summit” was held at the headquarters of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. Prof. Fusheng Pan, director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, was invited to attend the summit and chair the roundtable meeting with Carlos Moedas, European Commission Innovation Commissioner and former Secretary of State of the Portuguese Government. Dr. Jiangfeng Song was one of the selected 30 young researchers from several countries who participated in the “Forum for the Next Generation of Researchers 2017”.

The World Materials Summit is held every two years, and invited no more than 100 famous scientists and government officials to participate each time. The International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) has organized previous events in the US, China, France and Portugal, and published the Lisbon Declaration and the Washington Declaration. The “6th World Materials Summit” invited 80 famous scientists and government officials to attend the event, and 30 young researchers participated in the event. The subject of the event was Materials Innovation for the Global Circular Economy and Sustainable Society (i.e., based on reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials and/or energy).

More than 30 world-renowned scientists and government officials made important speeches at the summit, including Nobel Prize winners, UN officials, president of the European Federation of Materials, President of the International Federation of Materials and so on. Mr. Jerzy BUZEK, former President of the European Parliament and Mr. Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, the Council of Europe’s Deputy Secretary General, gave Important speeches.

Prof. Fusheng Pan hosted the roundtable meeting and summarized the views of the summit.

The roundtable focuses on material innovation for circular economy and sustainable social development. It is divided into five topics: energy supply for super-large cities, energy supply for remote communities, energy cycle, materials and systems for the future intelligent society and disruptive materials for the future.

Prof. Gorge Smith, Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Pan co-hosted the discussion of "the Strasbourg declaration". The chairman of IUMRS, the European materials research society, the vice dean of the Australian academy of sciences, the professor of Stanford university, Brazil material society delegate, and India material society delegate etc., participated in the discussion and the " the Strasbourg declaration 2017" have been declared.

On the “Forum for the Next Generation of Researchers 2017”, fifteen famous material scientists made reports. The thirty young scholars were divided into five sub-groups, and their research results or group discussions were presented. The organizing committee of the summit issued the participation certificate to each young scholar.

The delegates from China, including Prof. Duan Weng (vice chairman of China Materials Research Society (MRS)), Prof. Yafang Han (secretary General of MRS), Dr. Yibo Wang (research fellow Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Dr. Kai Liu (research fellow Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences),

Dr. Rui Ran (Tsinghua University), Dr. Yanhua Cheng (Donghua University), Dr. Yong Zhao (Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Dr. Hailong Yu (Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) participated in the Forum.
