Recently, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially informed that Prof. Fusheng Pan is elected as the Chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 (magnesium technical committee of ISO) for a term of 6 years. The chairman was voted by China, United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Russia, Italy, South Korea, Australia and other ISO members. It is highly recognized by the international organizations for the achievements of China's magnesium and magnesium alloy industry. Additionally, ISO also recognize the high academic reputation and achievement in R&D of Prof. Fusheng Pan in the field of magnesium and magnesium alloy.
The International Organization for Standardization, abbreviated as ISO, is a global non-governmental Organization. ISO came from the Greek 'ISOS' with the meaning of EQUAL. The International Organization for Standardization was founded in 1946. China joined the ISO in 1978 and officially became a participating member in 2008 at the 31st International Standards Organization Conference. ISO is responsible for standardizing activities in the vast majority of areas, including military, oil, shipping and other monopolistic industries. ISO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has a membership of 165 national standards bodies (till May 2013). The official languages of ISO are English, French and Russian. The Central Secretariat locates in Geneva, Switzerland, which is responsible for the management. The Central Secretariat currently has more than 170 staff and is headed by the Secretary-General. The purpose of ISO is to establish standardization and related activities to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services, and to promote the cooperation in the intellectual, scientific, technological and economic fields. ISO carries out its technical activities through its 2,856 technical groups, including 611 technical committees (SC), 2022 working groups (WG) and 38 special working groups. ISO 9000 series standards and related standards have great influence on the globalization of Chinese industry.
China has the biggest R&D and industrialization on magnesium and magnesium alloy, which plays an important role in promoting the development and application of magnesium and magnesium alloy industries in the world. In the past decade, the application of magnesium alloy castings has increased more than 10 times. Wrought magnesium alloy plate, profile, etc. have been put into large-scale production, and part of the wrought magnesium alloy products has been successfully applied in 3C and other fields. Magnesium resources are extremely rich, and magnesium alloy is one of the most potential lightweight materials. Therefore, it is of great strategic significance to promote the development and application of magnesium alloy.
Prof. Fusheng Pan is the president of Chongqing Academy of Sciences and Technology, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, vice president of the Chinese Material Research Society, vice president of the Chinese Magnesium Association, vice chairman of the Chongqing Association of Science and Technology, winner of HLHL Prize, and USA Dupont S&T Innovation Prize. He holds over 100 authorized patents, and has published over 400 SCI journal papers. Prof. Pan is engaged in R&D and application of magnesium and magnesium alloy for a very long time and gains remarkable achievement. He has studied and/or worked at Oxford University, Stuttgart University, Chiba University, University of California, and Queen Mary. He was appointed as Honorary Professor of the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2015. Prof. Pan was chairman of the European Materials Conference in 2016, chairman of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys, chairman of the 1st and 2nd UK-China Advanced Materials Symposium.
