On Oct. 27-28, 2016, plenary meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys" was held in Tokyo, Japan. The meeting was organized by Light Metal technical committee (TC 79) of IS, hosted by Japanese Magnesium Association. Delegates from United Kingdom, France, South Korea, Japan, and China attended the meeting. The amendment of the standards “ISO 3116: 2007 Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Wrought magnesium alloys” (proposed by CCMg), “ISO 26202:2007 Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Magnesium alloys for cast anodes” (proposed by MAGONTEC in China) was discussed in the meeting. It is decided a new working group (WG) will be created for each standard when the proposal is approved by all the ISO members. Proposals from ISO WGs on “Magnesium alloy ingots and castings”, “Evaluation method for cleanliness of magnesium and magnesium alloy ingots”, and “Method of analyzing oxygen for evaluating magnesium and magnesium alloys” were also discussed in detail. 8 resolutions were approved by unanimity in the end.

Chairman of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and gave a welcome speech. Prof. Fusheng Pan further addressed the strategic significance of the development of ISO standards on magnesium alloy to the healthy development of the magnesium industry in the world. He also suggested to enlarge the P-members and establish e-platform for frequent e-meetings. Committee Manager of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Mr. Huan Xi presided over the meeting and prepared the Resolutions and Minutes.

Prof. Bin Jiang and Dr. Jiangfeng Song from Chongqing University also participated in the meeting.
