On Sep. 26-29, 2017, plenary meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys" was held in Beijing, China. The meeting was organized by Light Metal technical committee (TC 79) of ISO, hosted by Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China (SAC). Delegates from United Kingdom, France, Japan, China and other countries attended the meeting. The revision of “ISO 3116: 2007 Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Wrought magnesium alloys “(led by CCMg), “ISO 26202:2007 Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Magnesium alloys for cast anodes” (Led by Magontec in China) were discussed in detail in the meeting. It is decided that DIS (Draft of International Standards) of these two standards will be submitted to the ISO/TC79/SC 5 for balloting after modification. The delegates proposed to revise the standard "Magnesium and magnesium alloys. Unalloyed magnesium - Chemical composition", and decided to create a working group when the member approved the ballot. It is also proposed to develop the standard on determination of rare earth in magnesium and magnesium alloys, and decided to communicate with ISO /TC 298 (Rare Earth Standards Committee) at first, and then discuss with technical committee members. Several ISO international standards, such as "Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Determination of mercury", "Magnesium alloys - Determination of Li by ICP-AES", "Method of analyzing oxygen for evaluating magnesium and magnesium alloys", etc. were also discussed. Eight resolutions were approved by unanimity.

As chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5, vice president of the Chinese Material Research Society, president of Chongqing Academy of Sciences, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and gave a welcome speech. Prof. Pan drew up the future work of ISO/TC 79/SC 5. He mentioned that the number of current ISO standards on magnesium alloy is few and the quality of some standards is low. The Chairman pointed out that much work needs to be done on the development of current international standards on magnesium alloys and people should working together to develop more and better international standards on magnesium alloys. The Committee Manager of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 “magnesium and magnesium alloy”, Mr. Huan Xi gave the closing speech of the meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5.

Prof. Bin Jiang and Dr. Jiangfeng Song from Chongqing University also participated in the meeting. The international standardization of magnesium alloys has attracted much attention, Prof. Jing Zhang from CCMg and other experts have become the experts of ISO/TC 79/SC 5.
