Meetings of ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals" were held in Lisbon, Portugal on Oct. 14-19, 2018, which includes the plenary meetings of ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals" and ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys", and working group meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 /WG 8 on wrought magnesium alloy, etc.. The meetings were organized by ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals", hosted by Portugal Quality Institute. Delegates from France, China, United States, Japan, Portugal, United Kingdom, Norway and other countries. Chairman of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and provided a speech on the further work of ISO TC 79/SC 5.

The delegates discussed on the ISO 3116: 201X “Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Wrought magnesium alloys” with the project leader of Prof. Bin Jiang from CCMg. The meeting believed that the main work of the working group had been successfully completed, and it was determined to actively promote the work of FDIS after the DIS of ISO 3116 voting was completed, and the related working group was disbanded.

The Japanese delegation proposed to stop ISO/WD 18677 “Method of analyzing oxygen for evaluating magnesium and magnesium alloys” and disband ISO/ TC 79/ SC 5/WG 07.

The project leader from Magontec, China of ISO 26202 "magnesium and magnesium alloys - magnesium alloys for cast anodes" responded to the comments on the ISO/CD 26202. It is decided to the revision version will be submitted to ISO/CD 26202 for balloting for the next stage.

Chinese delegates proposed two new international standards on magnesium alloys, namely "ISO/NP 23700" and "ISO/NP 23694". The background, reason and content framework of the new standards were elaborated. It is decided that when ISO/NP 23700 and ISO/NP 23694 be approved by members, a new working group will be created.

International Standards such as “Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Determination of Rare Earth”, “Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Determination of Mercury”, “Magnesium alloys - Determination of Sn by ICP-AES” and “Magnesium alloys - Determination of Be by ICP-AES” were also discussed in detail. Seven resolutions were approved by unanimity.

The meeting has decided that the 2019 plenary meeting ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys" will be held in Australia in September 2019, and experts from all aspects of magnesium alloy industry in the world will be invited to attend the meeting for the first time.

As chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, vice president of the Chinese Material Research Society, chairman of Chongqing Association for Science & Technology, president of Chongqing Academy of Sciences & Technology, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and gave a welcome speech. He puts forward specific suggestions on optimizing the standardization system of ISO TC 79/SC 5. He is looking forward to working together to develop more and better international standards for magnesium alloys. Prof. Fusheng Pan also suggests to attract more Member Bodies and motivate more experts to actively participate in the standard work. Committee Manager of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Mr. Huan Xi gave the close speech and arranged the future work.

Prof. Bin Jiang and Dr. Jiangfeng Song from Chongqing University also participated in the meeting. Dr. Jiangfeng Song and Dr. Ken (delegate from BSI from UK) were appointed for drafting the resolution for ISO TC 79/SC 5 meeting.
