Plenary meetings of ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals" were held in Chicago, USA on Nov. 18-22, 2019, including the plenary meetings of ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals" and ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys", the working group meetings of ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 4 on element analysis and ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 9 on wrought magnesium alloy products, etc.. The meeting was organized by ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals", hosted by Aluminium Association (USA). Delegates from France, China, United States, Germany, Italy, Japan and other countries participated in the meeting. Chairman of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and made a speech on the further work of ISO TC 79/SC 5.
Project leader of "ISO/NP 23700", Prof. Xianhua Chen from Chongqing University reported the detailed progress. The delegates had a depth discussion on "ISO / NP 23700". The meeting decided to change the title of the ISO 23700 to "wrong magnesium and magnesium alloys – rolled plates and sheets" and submit the Draft International Standard (DIS) before March 1, 2020.
The delegates also discussed in detail on "ISO/NP 23694" led by Xinyu Gao from Northeast Light Alloy Co. Ltd., and decided to change the title of the project to "Wrought Magnesium and magnesium alloys – Extruded Rods, Bars and Tubes", and submit the Draft International Standard (DIS) before March 1, 2020.
Dr. Norbert Hort from Helmholtz Zentrum Geestacht, Germany attended the meeting as a representative of German Standardization (DIN). He stated that the international standard should distinguish rolled plate and extruded plate.
The delegates also discussed the standards on element analysis of magnesium alloy. It is decided to stop the balloting on ISO/NP 4154 and change the title of ISO/NP 4380 to "Magnesium and Magnesium alloys – Determination of yttrium by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric analysis". Seven resolutions were approved by unanimity. It was preliminarily decided that the plenary meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "magnesium and magnesium alloys" in 2020 would be held in Europe from Oct. 19 to 23, 2020.
As Chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chairman of Chongqing Association for Science & Technology, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, Prof. Fusheng Pan attended the meeting and gave a welcome speech. He puts forward specific suggestions to improve the quality of the ISO standards and optimize the standardization system of ISO TC 79/SC 5. He is looking forward to all of us working together to develop more and better international standards for magnesium alloys. Committee Manager of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Mr. Huan Xi presided over the meeting.
Prof. Jingfeng Wang, Prof. Xianhua Chen, and Dr. Jiangfeng Song from CCMg also attended the meeting. Dr. Jiangfeng Song and David Krupka were appointed for drafting the resolution of the ISO/TC 79/SC 5 meeting.
