The plenary meeting of ISO/ TC 79 "Light Metals" was successfully held on Oct. 19-23, 2020. The meeting was held both online with Zoom and offline. Representatives from France, China, United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal and other countries attended the meeting. Chinese representatives gathered at Liyuan hotel in Chongqing. The meeting includes plenary meetings of ISO/TC 79 "Light Metals"and ISO/TC 79/SC 5 "Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys”, and working group meeting of ISO / TC 79 / SC 5 / WG 4 on element analysis. Chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5, Prof. Fusheng Pan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering) attended the meeting and made an important speech.

TPM from ISO/CS, Mr. Nathan Taylor introduced the latest updates and future plans of ISO Central Secretariat. Dr. Xiongfei Chen from Guobiao (Beijing) Testing & Certification Co. Ltd. reported the progress of five standards on element analysis, including ISO/WD 4155 "Magnesium and magnesium alloys - Determination of nickel content - Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry", etc.. Mr. Michihisa Uemoto from Japan Standardization (JIS) reported the progress and future plan of working group of ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 4 "Magnesium alloy element analysis method". Mr. Xinyu Gao reported the progress and future plan of working group of ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 9 "Wrought Magnesium Alloy Products". Suggestions were provided to revise the three standards proposed by JIS on element analysis for magnesium and magnesium alloys. In addition, delegates from Chongqing University made a new international standard proposal on "Wrought magnesium alloy profiles" and planned to initiate the new project proposal in the near future. Four resolutions were approved by unanimity.

As chairman of ISO/TC 79/SC 5, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, chairman of Chongqing Association for Science & Technology, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, Prof. Fusheng Pan made a speech on improving the quality of ISO standard on magnesium alloy and optimizing the standard system of magnesium alloy. He expected everyone to make joint efforts to construct more and better international standards for magnesium alloy. Committee Manager of ISO TC 79/SC 5, Mr. Huan Xi gave the close speech.

Prof. Xianhua Chen, Dr. Jinxing Wang, Dr. Jiangfeng Song and Dr. Jianbo Li from CCMg in Chongqing University also attended the meeting.

In addition, on Oct. 18-19, 2020, the meeting of seven national standards and group standards and the preparatory meeting of plenary meeting of ISO/TC 79/SC 5 were successfully held in Liyuan Hotel, Chongqing, China. The meeting was organized by Sub-Committee on Light Metal Standards, hosted by CCMg in Chongqing University. The experts at the meeting discussed seven standards in detail, such as "Magnesium alloy die casting for steering wheel armature"and etc.. The work progress of working groups ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 4 on element analysis and ISO/TC 79/SC 5/WG 9 on wrought magnesium alloy products was discussed in detail.
