The 6th National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Workers Commendation Conference was held on December 15, 2014 in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Prof. Fusheng Pan, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, was awarded the honorary title of "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker". Two people from Chongqing University were awarded this year.
The "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker" was established in 1997 by the China Association for Science and Technology. Since 2010, it has been changed to be selected every two years, and so far it has been selected for six times. The title of "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker" is granted to the person as a lifetime honor. This award aims to deeply implement the strategy of invigorating the country through science, technology and education and the strategy of reinvigorating China through human resource development, and vigorously promote the good customs of respecting labor, respecting knowledge, respecting talents, and respecting creation. The candidates are mainly the excellent experts in the natural sciences, technical sciences, engineering technology and related scientific fields in our country. The selected person should dedicate his life to their work, exemplify scientific ethics, and obtain scientific and technological achievements which have a major impact on the overall economic and social development. They also have to made remarkable achievements and outstanding contributions in the development of science and technology.
Prof. Fusheng Pan has been engaged in the research and engineering of magnesium alloys and aluminum alloys for a long time, and has achieved a number of important scientific and technological achievements in the second phase control of light alloys, the development of new magnesium alloy materials, and the development and application of new technologies for magnesium alloys and aluminum alloys. Moreover, he established the national magnesium alloy industrialization base, and made important contributions to the development, growth and globalization of our country's magnesium science and technology and industry. He is the leader of the national 973 project expert team from 2007 to 2012, the editor-in-chief of the international publication Journal of “Journal of Magnesium and Alloys” published by Elsevier publishing house and the editorial board of six important international publications in English, a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. Prof. Pan is also award the first group of leading engineer of the National "Ten Thousand Talent Program", national outstanding professional and technical talents, national experts of the National Ten Thousand Talents Project, and won the Ho Leung Ho Lee Award, National Outstanding Youth Fund, DuPont Science and Technology Innovation Award and the second China Youth Science and Technology Award. Prof. Pan is the dean of the Chongqing Academy of Science and Technology. In addition, Prof. Pan is the chairman of the Magnesium Alloy Branch of Chinese Materials Research Society, and the chairman of the Chongqing Institute of Materials.
Prof. Fusheng Pan is responsible for the establishment of the National Key Discipline of Materials Science and the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys (CCMg) of Chongqing University. He is the director of the CCMg and the head of the Changjiang Scholars Innovation Team in the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Prof. Pan has published more than 300 important academic papers in domestic and foreign journals (including more than 270 indexed by SCI), published 9 scholarly books, authorized more than 60 national invention patents, formulated 8 national and industry standards. As the leader, he obtained 2 progress awards in national science and technology, 2 first prizes for technological invention of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and 2 first prizes for scientific and technological progress at other provincial and ministerial levels. As an internationally renowned expert who has made significant contributions in the field of magnesium alloys, he is also an honorary professor in the University of Queensland, Australia, appointed in 2014.
