On March 22-24, 2017, at the invitation from Professor Fusheng Pan (President of Chongqing Academy of Science and Technology and Director of CCMg of Chongqing University), Professor Kwang Seon Shin (Member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, former Chairman of the Korean Society of Metals and Materials) from Seoul National University in South Korea visited Chongqing University. Professor Pan and Professor Shin conducted detailed discussions on the establishment of a new international platform for magnesium alloys, cooperation on projects, visits and exchanges of teachers and students, and jointly promote the development of international journal of Journal of Magnesium Alloys. They reached an agreement.

On March 24, Professor Kwang Seon Shin presented at the Frontier Forum of Engineering Science of Chongqing University and gave an academic lecture entitled “Development of High Performance Magnesium Alloy Sheets via Twin Roll Casting Process” at Room 319 in CCMg. The lecture was hosted by Professor Dingfei Zhang, Executive Deputy Director of CCMg. More than 40 teachers and graduate students from College of Materials Science and Engineering of Chongqing University attended the lecture. Before the lecture, Prof. Youqiang Hu, Deputy Director of the Department of Engineering, awarded Professor Kwang Seon Shin a commemorative plaque for the Frontier Forum of Engineering Science of Chongqing University.

In the lecture, Professor Kwang Seon Shin introduced the relevant situation of Seoul National University in South Korea, the development status of the new twin-roll casting technology, and the application of magnesium alloy sheets produced by twin-roll casting in the automotive and other fields. In addition, he presented the modeling of magnesium alloy twin-roll casting, explained in detail the simulation and control process of the liquid fraction change in the twin-roll casting process. Finally, Professor Kwang Seon Shin introduced the latest research progress of his research team’s work in high-performance twin-roll casting magnesium alloy. These research results are of great significance to the development and promotion of magnesium alloys.

Professor Kwang Seon Shin’s high-level academic lecture had aroused great interest and eager attention from the on-site teachers and students. During the discussion, teachers and students raised relevant questions about magnesium alloys, and Professor Kwang Seon Shin patiently answered them in detail. He also welcomed outstanding graduate students from Chongqing University to join his research team and engage in academic research on magnesium alloys. Finally, the academic activity was successfully concluded with a round of applause.

Professor Kwang Seon Shin is an internationally renowned senior magnesium alloy expert. He is currently the Chairman of Korea Magnesium Technology Research Association, the Director of the Magnesium Technology Innovation Center of Seoul National University, the former Chairman of the Korea Institute of Metals and Materials, and the Chairman of 10th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and Applications. He has given more than 100 conference talks and invited talks at international conferences. He specializes in the material development, preparation and processing, and performance research of advanced structural materials such as magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys, and copper alloys. He has obtained very deep attainments in high-strength and toughness magnesium alloys, high plasticity magnesium alloys, magnesium alloy casting, plate preparation and processing, and material structural performance characterization.
