The National Key Research and Development Project of deformed magnesium alloy successfully passed comprehensive performance evaluation
CCMg Dec 6, 2021

On December 3, 2021, the High-Technology Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology organized a comprehensive performance evaluation meeting of the "13th Five-Year Plan", National Key Research and Development (R&D) Project, "key technology for manufacturing large-size high-performance deformed processing materials of magnesium alloy" project online. The project leader, Prof. Fusheng Pan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, professor of Chongqing University), five subject leaders and researchers, and other project participants from Chongqing University, Institute of metal research (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanxi Yinguang Huasheng Magnesium Co. Ltd., Beijing University of Technology, Northeastern University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, and Chongqing Chang'an Automobile Co., Ltd., attended the meeting.

At the meeting, the project leader, Prof. Fusheng Pan, on behalf of the project team, reported to the expert group the self-evaluation of the comprehensive performance of project, with respects of project background, project research content and objectives, research tasks and index achieving status, the main outcomes and benefits achieved by the project, the usage of funds and organizational management. The expert group listened carefully to the report of the project team, watched the video demonstration of the project results, reviewed the relevant documents and information, questioned the relevant issues, and made overall comments and scores on the completion of the project. The expert group unanimously agreed that the project has fully completed the relevant work content specified in the task statement, reached the expected project objectives and assessment indicators. They highly affirmed the project on the remarkable outcomes of the theory of strengthening and ductilizing of magnesium alloy and common key technology research, and they agreed that the project passed the comprehensive performance evaluation.

The National Key R&D Project, "key technology for manufacturing large-size high-performance deformed processing materials of magnesium alloy", was approved in July 2016, led by Chongqing University, with 34 million yuan of national special funding. The project aims at "four orientations", for the key technical bottlenecks and basic theoretical problems of production and application of large-size deformed magnesium alloy products. It carried out the research on the new controlling mechanism of synergistic strengthening and ductilizing, alloy design of magnesium alloy, preparation of large-size ingot billets and deformed materials, and residual stress reduction and surface protection, etc. It established the independent production capacity and realized the demonstration applications of magnesium alloy products in transportation, aerospace, weapons and equipment, electronic information and other fields. The expert group believes that the research outcomes will be of great importance to the aerospace, aviation, weaponry, electronic information and other fields. The expert group believes that the research results have an important contribution to the aerospace, energy saving and emission reduction, and other major national needs. It has an important value to the main battlefield of national economic construction, such as automotive lightweighting and manufacturing competitiveness improvement. The project has formulated and approved a number of international standards and won two international awards. Such achievements have an important impact in the international arena and significantly enhance the international discourse of China's magnesium industry.
