With the approval of the International Mg Society, the "International Standard Expert Studio (Magnesium and Magnesium Alloy Surface Treatment Technology)" settled in Guangdong Research Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology. Professor PAN Fusheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the team leader of the studio. Professor HAN Enhou, president of Guangdong Research Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology, served as the co-chair. On Oct.18th, 2022, International Mg Society held the launching ceremony of the International Standard Expert Studio (Magnesium and Magnesium Alloy Surface Treatment Technology) in Guangzhou. HUANG Li, Director of the ISO Liaison Office of the Standard Innovation Management Department of the State Administration for Market Regulation, WEI Feng, researcher of the Standardization Management Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, LIU Yongtan, Deputy Director of the Standardization Department of Guangdong Administration for Market Regulation, delivered speeches at the meeting. Vice President XI Huan of Chongqing Advanced Light Metals Research Institute introduced the expert studio construction plan.

First of all, President HAN delivered a welcome speech to the leaders and experts attending the meeting online or on-site and introduced the construction of the Institute. HAN said that the Research Institute is the inheritance of the corrosion science section of the Institute of Metals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is a continuation of technology and talent and also a new research and development institute. It is an important research institute in the field of material anti-corrosion science, has rich technology accumulation and a strong talent team, already made outstanding contributions to the field of corrosion science and engineering applications in China and even the world.
Academician PAN, President of the International Mg Society and Head of the International Standards Expert Studio (Magnesium and Magnesium Alloy Surface Treatment Technology) attended the meeting and delivered a speech. PAN firstly thanked the State Administration for Market Regulation and Administration and the local government of Guangdong Province for their support on standardization. He stressed that in recent years, the country has paid great attention to standardization and issued many policy documents to support the development of standardization. ‘Only high-quality standards leads to high-quality development’ as President XI of PRC said in 2021. Standards are the lifeline of industries and enterprises and one of the legal basis for international fair trade. China must make more efforts and contributions in the field of international standardization. Academician PAN pointed out that the establishment of the International Standard Expert Studio (the field of magnesium and magnesium alloy surface treatment technology) is an important measure launched by the International Mg Society in the standardization work, which meets the actual needs of the development of the magnesium industry from multiple angles of points, lines and surfaces. The studio will work with experts from Chongqing University, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Chongqing Advanced Light Metals Research Institute and other units from all parts of the world, as well-known foreign R&D institutions and enterprises to jointly promote the development and improvement of international standards for the magnesium industry with Guangdong Guangdong Research Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology. As the chairman of ISO/TC79/SC5 Technical sub-Committee, I will consider including the International Mg Society (IMS) in the Liaison Committee of ISO/TC79 and ISO/TC79/SC5 and strengthening cooperation.
Director HUANG pointed out that at present, magnesium alloy technology innovation has made breakthroughs, and the industrialization of magnesium alloys is changing rapidly. It has important application value and broad application prospects in more and more fields such as automobiles, electronics, aerospace and other fields. As a "Green Material in the 21st Century", magnesium alloy will also promote new business forms, new industries and new models, stimulate new development momentum and create huge economic benefits. With the rapid development of magnesium alloy technology and industry, government regulatory agencies, industry and scientific and technological communities have become more and more aware that the strategic and sustainable development of the magnesium alloy industry urgently needs to strengthen the leading role of standards and standardize industrial development. Surface treatment is an important link in the production and application of magnesium alloys. The International Mg Society established this studio, which is an inevitable product of the development of the industry. In the face of this ‘once in a blue moon’ and golden opportunity, the studio brings together authoritative experts and scholars from industry, university and research around the world covered the general foundation, technology and products of magnesium alloys. It will certainly help promote the standardized development of global magnesium alloy technology and industry in the future.
After the launching ceremony, Vice President XI introduced the studio construction plan. XI said that the Studio is authorized by International Mg Society and will be the main producing workshop of IMS international standards in the field of surface treatment of magnesium alloys in the future. Corrosion is one of the main factors restricting the expansion and application of magnesium alloys. However, from the perspective of international standardization, this work is blank, and there are no corresponding standards in the ISO or any other international system, which is extremely detrimental to the healthy and sustainable development of the magnesium alloy industry, and the formulation of relevant international standards urgently needs to be carried out. The Information Committee on International Mg Society, which is mainly responsible for the relevant work in the field of magnesium and magnesium alloy information, including standardization and etc. In the field of magnesium alloy surface treatment, Guangdong Guangdong Research Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology was selected to cooperate to carry out the construction of an international standard system and the development of several international standards. Through months of research and discussion, the studio's early research team has completed the first draft of the standard system table for surface treatment (coating) of magnesium alloys and is currently seeking the opinions of the International Committee of Experts.
