The 2024 International Magnesium Week, including the 8th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys (ICM8) and the 13th Conference on Magnesium Alloys and Their Applications (Mg2024), was successfully held in Chongqing from November 2 to 6, 2024. Jointly organized by the International Magnesium Society (IMS) and the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys (JMA), and hosted by Chongqing University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this event marked a historic milestone as the largest international conference in the history of the magnesium industry.
Distinguished attendees included Guiyun Chen, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC); Fusheng Pan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Chairman of the Chongqing Association for Science and Technology, and Chairman of the conference; Houbai Rong, Academician of the CAE; Enhou Han, Academician of the CAE; Alan Luo, Academician of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering; Jian Lu, Academician of the French Academy of Technologies; Zhengxiao Guo and Javier Llorca, Academicians of the European Academy of Sciences; Kwang Seon Shin, Academician of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology; and Shixue Dou, Huakun Liu, and Zaiping Guo, Academicians of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Yedong Feng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Chongqing University, also attended alongside numerous other leaders and guests. In total, 11 academicians and over 1,200 representatives from 22 countries and regions participated, with nearly 400 reports presented across 10 parallel sessions.

On November 4, the IMS International Standards Expert Meeting and Standard System Construction Discussion were held, attended by prominent figures including Fusheng Pan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Chairman of the International Magnesium Society (IMS); Enhou Han, CAE Academician and President of the Guangdong Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology Innovation; and Rongmei Fan, Director of the Standardization Department of Chongqing Municipal Market Supervision Administration. Representatives from over 30 domestic and international organizations participated in the event, totaling more than 80 standardization experts. The meeting marked a significant milestone with releasing the first three IMS standards, officially initiating the IMS’s mission to lead the global magnesium industry in standards development, standardization services, system support, and integrating National Quality Infrastructure.
The IMS International Standards Expert Meeting
The 2024 JMA Editorial Board Meeting convened during the conference, gathering 98 editors and young editorial members from eight countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Japan, China, Czech Republic, and Australia. The meeting was led by Fusheng Pan, Chief Editor of JMA, who delivered the opening address. The session was chaired by Professor Xiaodong Peng, Executive Deputy Editor of the journal. Professor Yan Yang, Deputy Director of the editorial office, presented the journal’s annual progress report.
Editorial members, including Enhou Han, Alan A. Luo, Yoshihito Kawamura, Yuansheng Yang, Zhengxiao Guo, and Nack J. Kim, expressed their congratulations on the journal’s achievements and engaged in in-depth discussions on enhancing academic quality, expanding international influence, and serving industrial needs. Constructive suggestions for the journal's future development were proposed, and Fusheng Pan concluded the meeting with a summary and detailed plans for upcoming initiatives while extending gratitude for the longstanding support from all editors.

On November 5, the New Era Magnesium Materials Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration Forum was held, co-chaired by Professor Bin Jiang of Chongqing University and Senior-Engineer Weineng Tang from Baosteel Metal Co., Ltd. Speakers included Professor Zhiwei Shan, Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong University; Professor Huiyuan Wang, Vice President of Hebei University of Technology; Xu Wang, Secretary of the Pingliang Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Gansu Province; Professor Liming Peng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Hai Zhou, Assistant Minister at Seres Automotive’s Intelligent Simulation Division, and Tong Wang from Yangtze River Delta Magnesium Materials Research Institute of Chongqing University. The forum highlighted successful collaborations between governments, universities, and enterprises such as Baowu Magnesium and Seres Automotive while fostering discussions on magnesium alloy development and the magnesium industry’s future growth.
The 2024 National Excellent PhD Student Forum on Magnesium Materials took place alongside the conference and was live-streamed on platforms such as “JMACCMg,” “Scientific Cloud,” and “Koushare Academic,” attracting over 18,000 viewers. Organized by Professor Yang Yan, Professor Zhihua Dong, and Associate Professor Jia She of Chongqing University, along with Professor Xiaojun Wang of Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Hucheng Pan of Northeastern University, Professor Min Zha of Jilin University, and Professor Yujun Wu of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the forum featured presentations by ten outstanding doctoral students from leading universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chongqing University, Zhejiang University, and Taiyuan University of Technology. Their research covered topics such as structural magnesium alloys, corrosion protection, and magnesium-based energy storage materials, sparking lively discussions and positive feedback from participants.

The 2024 International Magnesium Week has infused new energy into the fields of academic exchange, talent cultivation, international journal development, industry-academia collaboration, and industry standards for magnesium materials. It has significantly enhanced global partnerships among universities, research institutes, and enterprises while reinforcing the influence of Chongqing and Chongqing University in the magnesium industry and academia. This landmark event provided an invaluable platform for fostering innovation and deepening collaboration within the global magnesium community.
